Captian Sam was a leader of the Yosemite Indians. Captain Sam was married to Paiute Susie Sam. Susie died in August of 1903. Captain Sam had a very long life and died in the 1930s. Captain Sam was a Yosemite-Mono Lake Paiute. He and Susie had several children. Leanna, Louisa, George, Mattie and Pete (Pete died very young). Sisters Louisa and Leanna Sam married Paiute Bridgeport Tom and had many children. The family were very prominent basketmakers in Yosemite National Park.

Captain Pete Jim (Na'ha) was the captain of the Paiutes of Northern Yosemite and Hetch Hetchy Valley. He was also one of the founders of Bridgeport Paiute Colony of California. His daughers Nellie Jim-Charlie and Tina Jim-Charlie were some of the best Yosemite Indian basketmakers in Yosemite and throughout California.

Captain John (Poko Tucket or Shibana) was the leader of the Mono Lake Paiutes. He became Chief of the Yosemite-Mono Lake Paiutes at a very young age. He was chief during the time when non-indigenous people were entering the area. Captain John died in 1924. On his obituary it was said he cured and killed many.
