Great thoughts here Andrea... homes are made by people ... their love, care and living... however I'd also go by Ian coz even in a house fixtures and bricks there are memories of your old days. I know where I was grown, I knew its every inch of walls and floors and knew what was where... anyhow the only thing matters much is people.

Hi andrea,

this poem makes me think of parents. They birth children only to rear them to college age and ensure the children leave their home by making it possible for them to go. They then complain about the house being empty and cold etc. As such sometimes i used to think of parents as 'Ungrateful bastards'. Pardon my words.

Ungrateful bastards would be the title of my next poem.

Cheers

Great poem and you are wrong about one thing bricks and mortar  do hold the memoires of past events just has fixtures and fittings do ......

I remember the scuffs on the side of the stairs were my brother and I would ride the big silver tray just like a sledge in the snow that's so cold .
Fighting with stick like knights of old we would battle till dawn till the dragon was dead leaving scratches and dints were we would hit the plaster   ...I could go on but you get my drift  very well done

This poem brought back memories of my own--just the kind you expressed. You wrote well of the sadness that is all is left when a house is not a home anymore. The fixtures and things left are empty until they trigger an emotional response in us of the memories of the good times we experienced. So in a way, they are part of the good things we remember. Well written and thoughtful poem, Andrea--this is one of my favorites.
