I began taking photographs in the 1970s and have made artist's films since the 1980s. My moving image work explores a hybrid language embracing painterly visual themes, digital sound design and performance work. A key early influence was Maya Deren’s Choreography for the Camera. I share her view that cinematography can be thought of as a ballet for the camera. Camera movement can embody a powerful gestural language, the raw material for complex kinaesthetic montages. In my work, these evolve into lyrical and symbolic journeys through personal dreamscapes, ambiguously teetering between abstraction and realism.
My most recent piece, Delirium, was made during an artist’s residency in Brisbane in Spring 2006. It’s a heat-crazed, densely woven vision of the city, shot in infrared with a slow shutter. It has been screened at shows in Brisbane and Hobart, Tazmania.
I jitterbugged into jungle city
a shimmering delirium
of clustering geometries
splicing clouds in a black light sky…
I also run a video production company, specialising in documentary, animation and media based educational resources. Several examples of educational projects are included in my video folder.
