Put another log on the fire, just sit back and relax

Hillside

As soon as I can I'll do a better transfer of this to CD. My recorder has combined some tracks and split others up! Almost as Robert Wyatt said on his LP 'Nothing Can Stop Us', "A dodgy note here, a hesitant beat there - all evidence of our painful sincerity"!!

For Paul, Ramila, Matreya, Sabeena, Gautama, Kasana and Sangita

'The Hillsiders'!

Also in Memory of Gary, without whom none of the recordings here would have been made. 'That's right, blame me!', I can hear him saying!

Spinning Around.wma
Also available as Trolling Around/Not Drowning but Raving/Clever Dick. Exactly the same recording but with a different sort of tape hiss!

Cloudscape/Cloudburst.wma
Two for the price of two here, and you can hear the ageing Amstrad 4 track (thanks, Phyll and Gary) really beginning to give up the ghost on Cloudburst. As it was the machine used throughout this tape, in tandem with a wonderful AIWA cassette deck which also packed in soon after, the sound quality is not all it could be! Set your graphic equalisers to stun!

Hillsides/Trollbound/Martin's Hillside/Whirlpool/Hillside (part1).wma
Hillsides (also available elsewhere as 'Hillsides') was recorded in 1985 but spiderphonically enhanced by DLB for this tape. The others were all recorded around 1996-97. Trollbound and Whirlpool part of a tape of the Troll's eventual escape from the Spider Chamber. With Martin being another Hillside devotee (have tried looking on PHPs Reunited but not found him yet!) and great friend, and Hillside, well hopefully it speaks for itself!

Hillside (part 2).wma
It is probably helpful to have a thorough grounding in the story of the Talking Logs to fully comprehend this (unintentional) second-half of Hillside, but not essential.

Ecclectomania Plus - Part 2 (Snake Charming)/Variations Plus.wma
Arguably no better than the original Ecclectomania Part 2, the rather stark stereo separation doesn't help! One day I'll try to revive the original, done on the old Hammond Organ that Chrissy bought me for Christmas one year: now that's what I call a surprise! Variations Plus uses Variations Pt 1 from Spiderdome, plus slutchy bass wah-wah fuzz pedal (blame Troll) and organ additions.

Not Raving but Drowning/Hillside reprise.wma
The essential prequel to Not Drowning but Raving. Dick Le Burgh once commented to a member of the music press (who shall remain shameless), who was seeking to decode the hidden riddles within the apparently chaotic synthesiser lines, "Never mind the music, pretty nifty title, eh?"!!!

Wedding bells.wma
Built around one of Spiders earliest tunes, this was the first Amstrad recording (rather better quality than the later ones) done for one of my sisters' wedding.

For once the use of old worn out cassette tapes adds to the atmosphere here!
