Captain John (Poko Tucket or Shibana) was the leader of the Mono Lake Paiutes. He became Chief of the Yosemite-Mono Lake Paiutes at a very young age. He was chief during the time when non-indigenous people were entering the area. Captain John died in 1924. On his obituary it was said he cured and killed many.

Capt. Sam Yosemite Brigdeport Mono Lake Paiute.jpg

Captian Sam was a leader of the Yosemite Indians. Captain Sam was married to Paiute Susie Sam. Susie died in August of 1903. Captain Sam had a very long life and died in the 1930s. Captain Sam was a Yosemite-Mono Lake Paiute. He and Susie had several children. Leanna, Louisa, George, Mattie and Pete (Pete died very young). Sisters Louisa and Leanna Sam married Paiute Bridgeport Tom and had many children. The family were very prominent basketmakers in Yosemite National Park.

Captain Pete Jim (Na'ha) was the captain of the Paiutes of Northern Yosemite and Hetch Hetchy Valley. He was also one of the founders of Bridgeport Paiute Colony of California. His daughers Nellie Jim-Charlie and Tina Jim-Charlie were some of the best Yosemite Indian basketmakers in Yosemite and throughout California.

The Majority of Captain Sam and Susie Sam's children and grand children in 1928 documented on their California Indian Applications that both Capt. and Susie Sam were full blooded Paiutes.

These documents are used by the Bureau of Indian Affairs to determine tribal ancestry and Indian blood degree.

The Majority of Captain Sam and Susie Sam's descendents are enrolled members of Paiute tribes along the eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Today a few of their descendents are claiming to be Southern Sierra Miwuks for federal recognition.

Someone put Captain Sam's 1928 California Indian Application on their site. So you can view it.

Captain Sam is one of the most important Indians in Yosemite Indian history and yet he is left out of the story of Yosemite. Instead everyone is focusing on Susie Sam, the supposed Miwok, but in Paiute culture of that day Paiute men were the chiefs and captains.

They lived most of their lives in Paiute areas. Captain Sam was one of the founders of the Coleville Colony and also Bridgeport Colony.
